There’s a lot of dumb ass animal cruelty takes in general but my favorite is the people who think you need to force sled dogs to pull.

Have you ever walked a dog before in your entire life? They love to pull. They’re the pullingest damn things you ever saw. They’ll merrily rip your rotator cuff in half like a phone book for the chance to stick their own face into a pile of old feces. They’ll drag you down the road while you go through all 5 stages of grief trying to make them stop.

There are hundreds of products on the market promising to get ordinary non sled dogs to stop pulling their hapless owners down the road and spilling their iced coffees. People have gone so far as to use electric collars to try and zap sense into their poor stupid labradoodle that wants nothing more but to suicidally pull itself and everyone it loves into the snarling maw of the nearest leash reactive pit bull.

A dog that’s allowed to pull, nay, encouraged to pull, is probably the most self actualized animal on the planet right after seagulls that live somewhere with food stands outdoors.

great-and-small:

This is going to be an unpleasant post but I need to talk to y’all about heat stroke in dogs. I am an ER vet and I am seeing firsthand the death toll that this heat wave is taking on our pets. In the past two weeks, for every single weekend shift I have worked, we have had at least one DOA with a body temperature over 107 degrees. One of them had simply been on a 20 minute walk at 5pm. All of them were brachycephalic (short faced breeds like pugs and french bulldogs). Their owners were in shock that this could happen so quickly, and their grief lingers with me.

If you have a dog, and especially if you have a brachycephalic dog, you need to familiarize yourself with the signs of heat stroke. Do not take your dogs out in the heat of the day, be aware of the pavement temperature, and always have fresh water available for them. When I am outdoors with my dog I am checking on him constantly. This heat wave is extremely serious; I need you to keep yourself and your pets safe.

Fox News host Mark Levin railed against Judge Aileen Cannon, who was appointed by Donald Trump, after she ruled the classified document case against the former president would take place before the upcoming election.

On Friday morning, Cannon set the trial date for May 20, 2024, denying the Trump legal defense motion to delay the case in Florida until after the election. Trump faces  federal criminal charges for his handling of classified material after leaving office.

The ruling also denied Special Counsel Jack Smith‘s team request to have the trial set for December 2023. However, Levin directed his anger at Cannon, adding that she “let the country down” during a Sunday airing of Life, Liberty, and Levin.

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users’ Mental Health Crises for “Content”

image

I got this message from a bot, and honestly? If I was a bit younger and not such a jaded bitch with a career in tech, I might have given it an honest try. I spent plenty of time in a tough situation without access to any mental health resources as a teen, and would have been sucked right in.

Chatting right from your phone, and being connected with people who can help you? Sounds nice. Especially if you believe the testimonials they spam you with (tw suicide / self harm mention in below images)

image
image

But I was getting a weird feeling, so I went to read the legalese.

I couldn’t even get through the fine-print it asked me to read and agree to, without it spamming the hell out of me. Almost like they expect people to just hit Yes? But I’m glad I stopped to read, because:

image
  • What you say on there won’t be confidential. (And for context, I tried it out and the things people were looking for help with? I didn’t even feel comfortable sharing here as examples, it was all so deeply personal and painful)
image
  • Also, what you say on there? Is now…
  • Koko’s intellectual property - giving them the right to use it in any way they see fit, including
  • Publicly performing or displaying your “content” (also known as your mental health crisis) in any media format and in any media channel without limitation
  • Do this indefinitely after you end your account with them
  • Sell / share this “content” with other businesses
image
image
  • Any harm you come to using Koko? That’s on you.
  • And Koko won’t take responsibility for anything someone says to you on there (which is bleak when people are using it to spread Christianity to people in crisis)

I was curious about their business model. They’re a venture-capitol based tech startup, owned by Airbnb, the famous mental health professionals with a focus on ethical business practices./s They’re also begging for donations despite having already been given 2.5 million dollars in research funding. (If you want a deep dive on why people throw crazy money at tech startups, see my other post here)

They also use the data they gather from users to conduct research and publish papers. I didn’t find them too interesting - other than as a good case study of “People tend to find what they are financially incentivized to find”. Predictably, Koko found that Kokobot was beneficial to its users.

So yeah, being a dumbass with too much curiosity, I decided to use the Airbnb-owned Data-Mining Mental Health Chatline anyway. And if you thought it was dangerous sounding from the disclaimers? Somehow it got worse.

(trigger warning / discussions of child abuse / sexual abuse / suicide / violence below the cut - please don’t read if you’re not in a good place to hear about negligence around pretty horrific topics.)

Kokobot is incredibly predatory and exploitative. I wrote a post about how it exploits minors’ empathy and gamifies “giving mental health advice”, resulting in an unregulated mess that can only do harm to teens’ mental health in the long run.

There are young people on tumblr that actively seek support from KokoBot right now, if you check the tag for recent posts. Those people did not get paid to promote it, so do not harrass them. If you can, direct them towards resources about Kokobot (like this post) that are more transparent about what this company is up to.

When did koko bot start bc I think I was in the beta test for it on accident when I was a younger teen. Then it dissappeared and now its getting pushed again.

White text on a blue background: Australian Ballet Dancers Hold the Curtain! Dancers at the Australian Ballet have taken industrial action for the first time in over 40 years, twice delaying performances. The existing EBA agrees to "top up" dancers' salaries if the negotiated pay increase is less than CPI. The Company wants to scrap this clause, and has offered a 1% payrise for 2023 - a big cut in real terms when inflation is at 7%. Dancers have overwhelmingly voted "NO" to this management proposed agreement. While the company is crying poor, they fail to acknowledge the voluntary pay cuts dancers took during the pandemic, and that dancers are now struggling with the cost of living. The company also says it is not "feasible" for donors to contribute to salaries. Below this text there is an illustration of four ballet dancers in tutus performing the Dance of the Cygnets from Swan Lake in which they hold hands and perform the steps in unison in a line. The dancer on the far left is holding a megaphone with a speech bubble that says, "Roses, yes. But bread, too." The dancer on the other end of the line holds a picket sign that reads "Union Strong | MEAA"ALT
